Indonesian fashion designer Hian Tjen presented his 2019/2020 couture collection on Aug. 28 at Raffles Hotel in Kuningan, Jakarta.

Known for his love of feminine and elegant dresses with intricate details, the West Kalimantan native also celebrated his 10th year in fashion.

The show, titled Perfec10n, was said to be inspired by the women of the Amish community, who are known for their conservative lifestyle. Full skirts and long sleeves were adapted and modernized by Hian, who boldly played with materials and complex details such as embroidery, quilts, beadings, pleats and cross-stitching. The designer also featured handmade illustrations that depicted the activities of Amish women, such as farming and gardening.

In terms of silhouettes, Hian breathed new life into his work by experimenting with volumes and shapes. Dramatic notes in sleeves and shoulders go hand in hand with a combination of lace and tulle or wool with jacquard. Bustiers and bonnets are expertly mixed with embellished full skirts. Tones of broken white, cream, grey and moss green dominated the collection.

“Through over 50 looks in this show, I tried to show authenticity with different levels of complexity and techniques. Ever since I made the decision to be a couturier, every piece of clothing is singular and will never be duplicated,” Hian said.

Hian graduated from Esmod fashion school in 2003 and earned the Favorite Designer award at the 2007 Fashion Designer Competition (LPM) organized by Femina magazine. (wng)
