Chunky yet funky: JFW 2020 stays fresh for the heat

ith Jakarta’s temperatures hovering around the 36 degree Celsius mark, loose silhouettes and airy fabrics are key in the tropics, and the Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW) 2020 showed fashionistas how to do it right.

Considered the largest event of its kind in Southeast Asia, the fashion week, which runs until Oct. 28 at Senayan City shopping mall, Central Jakarta, features over 2,800 pieces from the 2020 Summer/Spring collections of over 260 labels from Indonesian designers and their foreign counterparts showcased in 76 runway shows.

Slow fashion label Sejauh Mata Memandang went with color blocking, neutralizing vivid yellows with black paneling on a light, floor-length jacket shown at the fashion week.

The brand’s signature stamp batik lent the look a more contemporary feel, as did the styling choice of wide leg trousers in the same yellow shade with no shirt.

With multicolored patchwork pieces for this season, Sejauh’s approach was to utilize the garment as a statement outer layer, with large swathes of white and the occasional black detailing toning down the combination’s sheer loudness.

An interesting tidbit of Sejauh’s latest collection, “Daur”, is that all 24 looks were made from unused and leftover fabrics. Creative director Chitra Subyakto confirmed the central tenet of the collection was the dangers of climate change, hence the upcycling as a way to reduce textile waste.
