Forget the popular sugary bubble tea or Indonesians' ultimate comfort food nasi goreng (fried rice). When it comes to app-based delivery services, spicy ayam geprek (smashed fried chicken with chili) clinched the top spot as the most-ordered item on GoFood throughout 2019.
The online food delivery service by ride-hailing app Gojek announced on Tuesday that it had received total orders of 300 million portions of ayam geprek last year, which according to GoFood's estimates, is "nearly equal to a round trip from Java to Kalimantan if the plates were arranged lengthwise".
Following in second place was es kopi susu (iced coffee with milk), which has seen rising popularity among young urbanites in recent years ─ thanks to the availability of more coffee kiosks in the country's cities ─ as GoFood recorded 13 million cups of the beverage ordered by customers through the app.
In third place was pisang goreng (fried banana), with Gojek recording 5 million pieces of the sweet tasty snacks ordered through GoFood throughout 2019.
"[The popularity] of ayam geprek has been tested through the years, as has kopi susu. It's also the same with pisang goreng; Indonesians cannot live far from fried snacks," chief food officer of Gojek Group, Catherine Hindra Sutjahyo, said during the announcement of the data on Tuesday.
Ayam geprek, which is popular among lovers of spicy food due to its fiery hot sambal (chili sauce), also secured first place as the most-ordered item during GoFood's Pesta MaMiMuMeMo, a month-long food promotion held between Nov. 5 and Dec. 6, 2018.
During the period, GoFood recorded 10 million orders of ayam geprek.
Catherine said that in 2019, page visits for GoFood had increased up to 60 percent, and the number of customers making transactions through the app doubled to more than 20 million customers compared to the same period in 2018.

Gojek data also shows that weekends recorded the most food orders.
“We are the largest in the region and perhaps in the top three to five in the world in food delivery services. We can say that because we are obsessed with our customer experience,” Catherine said.
Gojek co-CEO Kevin Aluwi said the homegrown decacorn strove to focus on improving customer experience, including by having more merchants and ensuring shorter delivery times.
“Over the past few years, we’ve really focused on [promotions but maybe service quality has not been on par with our business development," Kevin said, "We will now focus on improving our user experience and give the best services to our consumers, and not just talk about promotions."
