hina-based video sharing platform TikTok launched a new set of parental controls on Wednesday called “Family Safety Mode”. The feature will allow parents to control their children’s activity on the app.

According to a statement posted on its official website, the feature “links a parent’s TikTok account to their teen’s to control Digital Wellbeing features”, including screen time management, limits on direct messaging and a restricted mode to filter inappropriate content.

“As part of our commitment to safety, the wellbeing of our users is incredibly important to us. We want people to have fun on TikTok, but it's also important for our community to look after their wellbeing, which means having a healthy relationship with online apps and services,” said TikTok trust and safety head for Europe, the Middle East and Asia Cormac Keenan in the statement.

Parents or guardians who want to use the feature should create their own account on the app and then link the account to their children’s.

A similar screen time management feature has been available to users of the application since April 2019. It allows users themselves to set limits on how long they spend on TikTok each day.

“We have partnered with some of our most followed and loved creators to create unique and proactive in-app prompts that remind our community to be aware of the time they spend on TikTok and to encourage them to consider taking some time out,” Keenan said.

The new features will be available worldwide in the coming weeks. They are already available to users in the United Kingdom.

TikTok was launched under the name Musical.ly in 2014. It was later acquired by tech company ByteDance in November 2017 and merged with the existing app TikTok. The application has been downloaded by more than 1.5 billion people worldwide. (gis)
