ndonesian clothing company SukkhaCitta has been recognized in Fast Company’s prestigious 2020 World Changing Ideas Awards 2020 as a finalist in the Asia-Pacific region.

The awards are bestowed once a year to businesses and organizations considered to be making significant contributions for a better world.

“That was all SukkhaCitta was back in 2016: An idea that somehow life could be better for Indonesia’s millions of craftsmen and women,” wrote SukkhaCitta founder Denica Flesch on the company’s website.

Founded in 2016 by Denica, the Jakarta-based SukkhaCitta aims to make garments in a sustainable, environmentally conscious manner, while making sure that the workers make a living wage.

The company is operated in the form of a social enterprise, as it gives a portion of the profit made from each garment to build craft schools in the villages where it operates.

The company also strives to minimize environmental and social damage by using virtually traceable materials.

They use signature raw cotton fabric which handwoven by weavers in Medono village, Central Java; Tencel and Sylk from Lenzing AG made by Eucalyptus fibers through a closed-loop facility; natural dyes sustainably cultivated by farmers; plastic-free, hand-knot packaging made by women in Medono village; and freshwater sea shell buttons obtained from fishermen in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

The company had a goal of achieving 100 percent traceability in 2020.

SukkhaCitta stands out as the only Indonesian company recognized by the magazine with the award. Other finalists on the list include India's Khatabook, which allows micro, small and medium-sized businesses to keep a digital log of their financial transactions and accept payments online; and Singapore's The [Not-So] Convenience Store, which offers sustainable alternatives as opposed to conventional stores.

The winner in the Asia-Pacific region is Singapore's Phononic, which introduced its new cooling platform to replace traditional compressor-based, HVAC cooling systems.

Fast Company is an American magazine with an editorial focus on innovation in technology, leadership, world changing ideas, creativity and design. (gis/wng)
