he annual international contemporary art festival ARTJOG will hold a special event titled ARTJOG: RESILIENCE from Aug. 8 to Oct. 10 at the Jogja National Museum (JNM) in Yogyakarta.

ARTJOG was scheduled to take place from July 23 to Aug. 30 but was postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic.

During the social restrictions, the festival’s organizer observed that artists have continued finding new ways to create and exhibit their work through digital technology. “This has emphasized the character of Indonesian artists, who are flexible, persistent and creative,” said the organizer in a statement.

Inspired by the artists’ spirit, ARTJOG: RESILIENCE aims to celebrate the fortitude of the Indonesian art world and the festival’s achievements over 12 years. And contrary to the high-profile ARTJOG, which routinely showcases works by international artists, ARTJOG: RESILIENCE will focus on Indonesian artists.

“We would like to examine what can we do amid times of uncertainty,” said Heri Pemad, director of ARTJOG. “We have to be able to adapt to all kinds of situations, even the most difficult.”

ARTJOG curator Agung Hujatnikajennong said that ARTJOG: RESILIENCE would not only offer artistic reflections on the current Indonesian art scene, but also draw on the different potentials of the art ecosystem.

“The main inspiration for the theme of resilience lies in the different kinds of artistic and social works created by Indonesian artists during the pandemic. In this time of crisis, numerous artists have created art, while still being socially involved with the people, such as through fund raising or organizing charity exhibitions,” Agung said.

While programs such as the Young Artist Award and the ARGJOG Daily Performance will be left out of this year’s event, ARTJOG program manager Gading Paksi said the way artworks would be showcased would give the festival a new touch.

“Along with the works in the showrooms, we will create quality audiovisual content for the public to enjoy at home. If the situation allows, and we are permitted by the government, the exhibition can be accessed on site with health precautions in place,” he said.

ARTJOG will also hold a charity auction and an ARTCARE program to raise funds for Indonesian artists and people affected by the health crisis.

Education programs such as Exhibition Tour and Meet the Artist will be held online, along with the Murakabi Movement, as a continuation of the Warung Murakabi (Sufficing Kiosk) project showcased last year.

Created by artists Indieguerillas and Singgih S. Kartono, Warung Murakabi sold various local foods and beverages with a pop culture touch. It also displayed an installation that featured a bamboo-based bicycle, chairs and radios.

ARTJOG 2019 showcased 122 artworks by 39 artists, with more than 100,000 people reportedly attending the high-profile festival. (wng)
