Several historical Indonesian landmarks are featured in the town simulator game Fantasy Town.

They are Borobudur temple in Magelang, Lawang Sewu in Semarang, as well as the National Monument (Monas) and Kota Tua (old town) in Jakarta. The game also showcases traditional houses from West Sumatra, North Sumatra, Yogyakarta, East Nusa Tenggara, Papua and Makassar.

“Many elements in the Indonesian cultures, such as art, history and archeological materials, can only be seen by people who visit the sites,” director of Garena Indonesia Hans Kurniadi Saleh said during an online press conference on Thursday.

“Fantasy Town is our effort to preserve local culture and make it digitally accessible for anyone. Hopefully, the game can also be beneficial for cultural education and inspire the next generation.”

Josua Puji Mulia Simanjuntak, acting digital economy and creative products undersecretary at the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, said that a mobile game was considered to be a convenient and easy way to introduce Indonesian cultures to the international public.

“We will always support the growth of the game industry in Indonesia, especially because it is in accordance with the Proud of Indonesian-made Products movement that champions Indonesian cultures,” he said.

Fantasy Town was developed by Arumgames and released by Garena Indonesia. It was launched in July and has received praise for featuring characters from Indonesian folklore, such as Kabayan, Iteung and Radu.

In the game, players are invited to play out agriculture, farming and trading life, as well as explore adventures in unknown terrains and build dream cities marked with Indonesian culture. (wng)
