tarting on Sept. 18, video streaming platforms WeTV and iflix are set to stream their latest original show Yowis Ben the Series every Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m.

Available to iflix users in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, Yowis Ben the Series is based on the popular 2018 Indonesian comedy movie Yowis Ben, directed by Fajar Nugros and Bayu Eko “Bayu Skak” Moektito. Within three weeks, the Javanese-language film attracted around 800,000 moviegoers.

Serving as the film’s prequel, Yowis Ben the Series follows two students Bayu (Bayu Skak) and Doni (Joshua Suherman) who feel that they are hapless. Bayu is constantly mocked by his schoolmates for selling nasi pecel (rice served with vegetables and peanut sauce) at school, while Doni longs for his parents' attention and insists on having a girlfriend.

The 12-episode series also features actors Brandon Salim, Tutus Thomson, Anggika Bolsterli, Devina Aureel, Arief Didu, Putri Ayudya and Indra Widjaya, among others.

Lesley Simpson, country manager of WeTV and iflix Indonesia, said that Yowis Ben the Series offered diverse characters that could be appreciated by the public despite the series using the Javanese language.

Simpson said the project was powered by the resources and technology of tech giant Tencent, enabling it to stream, collaborate and produce a WeTV Original with local and global content. “Currently, our strength is a wide array of series, films and genres from various countries that can be streamed worldwide. Starting from Indonesia's best actors, directors and storylines, all can be seen on WeTV Original, which will be kicked off by the first WeTV Original Indonesia, Yowis Ben the Series,” Simpson said in a statement.

Director of production house Starvision Chand Parwez Servia said that its collaboration with WeTV and iflix was an opportunity to bring the series to a wider audience. “Yowis Ben is the first Indonesian film that received the highest rating on IMDB, which is 8.4,” Chand said.

To stream the series, viewers can download WeTV and iflix apps. WeTV’s premium users are able to watch the series earlier than free users. The subscription fee for WeTV starts from Rp 15,000 (US$1.01) per month. (wir/wng)
