DJ duo Diskoria, in collaboration with singer Afifah Yusuf, has released a cover of “Pelangi Cinta” (Rainbow of Love).

Written by famed musician A. Riyanto and first popularized by singer Jamal Mirdad in 1981, the song was covered one year later by renowned singer Hetty Koes Endang, Afifah’s mother.

“Along with having personal ties as it was sung by an inspiring figure in my life, the melody and concept of 'Pelangi Cinta' fit perfectly for a collaboration with Diskoria,” Afifah Yusuf said in a press release.

“It was a great surprise when the original singer, Hetty Koes Endang, was present during the vocal take,” Diskoria said. They added that the lyrics were modified slightly by Hetty, as the song was originally written from a male point of view.

“For the female version, the lyrics were slightly changed to add a feminine touch,” Diskoria said.

Released under the label Suara Disko, the single was produced by Diskoria along with musicians Imam Buana Luthfi and Pandji Dharma.

To add another element of surprise, another renowned musician was also involved in the project. Fariz RM, known for cementing the sophisticated sound of Indonesian pop and jazz in the 1980s, directed the music video for the single.

Founded in 2015, Diskoria consists of Merdi Leonardo and Fadli Aat. Both have a penchant for Indonesian disco in the 1970s and 1980s. Alongside playing selected Indonesian tracks at parties and events, Diskoria released two original singles, “Balada Insan Muda” and “Serenata Jiwa Lara”

The duo was nominated for the 2019 Indonesian Music Awards (AMI) for “Balada Insan Muda” in the Best Newcomer category. “Serenata Jiwa Lara”, which features actress Dian Sastrowardoyo, has been played 7 million times on Spotify and 4.5 million times on YouTube. (gis/wng)
