ndonesian singer-songwriter Sherina Munaf has reportedly contributed her voice to Earwig and the Witch (Aya to Majo), the first 3D computer graphic (CG) film by Tokyo-based animation film studio Studio Ghibli.

Helmed by Goro Miyazaki and produced by Toshio Suzuki, Earwig and the Witch will air on Dec. 30 at 7:30 p.m. local time on Japanese public broadcaster NHK.

“I was so lucky to have participated by singing the songs and voicing one of the characters,” Sherina wrote on her Twitter on Thursday.

In 2017, Sherina sang for a television commercial (TVC) with Studio Ghibli as part of a campaign for Japanese food manufacturer House Foods Group.

According to the film studio’s website, the 82-minute Earwig and the Witch also features Shinobu Terajima, Etsushi Toyokawa, Gaku Hamada and Kokoro Hirasawa.

Hayao Miyazaki, the Oscar-winning animator and cofounder of Studio Ghibli, was involved in the film’s planning process.

Adapted from the late British author Diana Wynne Jones’ book of the same name, Earwig and the Witch follows the journey of an orphaned young girl who has to live with a selfish witch, according to screendaily.com. Jones was also the author of fantasy novel Howl’s Moving Castle, which was made into an animated movie by Studio Ghibli in 2004.

Earwig and the Witch was named among the official selections for the 73rd Cannes Film Festival for Animated Films category alongside Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s Flee, Aurel’s Josep and Pete Docter’s Soul.

Established in 1985, Studio Ghibli was founded by animation directors Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki and the late Isao Takahata. It is known as one of the most highly acclaimed animation studios in the industry, with five of its films receiving Academy Award nominations. One of them, Spirited Away, won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film in 2003. (wir/wng)
