punk rock group consisting of Asian-American and Latin American musicians took the internet by storm over the weekend, and now they are signed.
The Linda Lindas have reportedly inked a deal with influential punk label Epitaph Records. The band, consisting of three tween sisters and a teenager, will join the label's ranks alongside punk legends like the Descendents, NOFX and Bad Religion.
The Linda Lindas, who took their name from Japanese filmmaker Nobuhiro Yamashita’s 2005 comedy Linda Linda Linda, went viral with an energetic performance of their song “Racist, Sexist Boy”.
“A little while before we went into lockdown, a boy came up to me in my class and said that his dad told him to stay away from Chinese people,” Mila, the band's 10-year-old drummer said, introducing the song. “After I told him that I was Chinese, he backed away from me. Eloise and I wrote this song based on that experience.”
Mila performed wearing a T-shirt from Bikini Kill, an influential all-female punk group from the 1990s that spearheaded the "riot grrrl" movement, which promoted inclusiveness and equality.
The video was recorded on May 4 at the LA Public Library to kick off the library’s Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration program. The band's set consisted of 9 songs, including a cover of “Big Mouth” by pop punk band The Muffs and Bikini Kill's “Rebel Girl” from riot grrrl.
The video of the performance was widely noticed after musicians such as Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea and Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello shared the song on Twitter on Friday.
Now playing for the rest of 2021:
