Emha to perform in the Netherlands

EMHA AINUN NADJIB: (JP)YOGYAKARTA: Emha Ainun Nadjib and his music group Kyai Kanjeng have been invited to perform in the Netherlands to help deal with possible negative impacts resulting from the screening of a controversial film on Islam by Geert Wilder.

Emha said the group would perform in the Netherlands on invitation from a Christian community network there.

"They have this concern that chaos might emerge in response to the screening of Fitna (Slander) by Geert Wilder," he said of the film that will be screened nationwide in the Netherlands on March 24.

"We have been invited to bridge the parties that may be dragged into conflicts due to the screening of the film," he said on the sidelines of the opening of "Komedi Putar" visual arts exhibition at Jogja Gallery.

He said he and his group would go the Netherlands in October this year to perform after waiting a few months to see how the Dutch audience would react to the film.

Emha said it was not the first time he and his group had been invited to calm tensions between conflicting communities through music and cultural performances. The group was previously invited to Finland, Italy and Germany following the controversial publication of the caricature of Prophet Muhammad in Denmark in 2005. -- JP/Sri Wahyuni
