The mayor of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, was in Jakarta on Thursday to promote the two's sister-city relationship and seek business ties.
"We've signed a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) today, which covers several fields. We want to develop the port of Jakarta. We also came with a business mission to promote Rotterdam water port to businesspeople here in Jakarta," Mayor Ivo Opstelten said.
He said the city of Rotterdam supported the Jakarta administration in the fields of information administration, waste management and cultural affairs, including museum management.
During the tenure of former Jakarta governor Sutiyoso, Opstelten visited Jakarta to sign an MoU on a management information system, waste and river management and the revitalization of Jakarta's Old Town.
Opstelten said the MoU had resulted in some excellent and successful projects.
Jakarta and Rotterdam have been sister cities since 1986.
Besides Rotterdam, Jakarta's other sister cities include Manchester in the United Kingdom, Berlin in Germany, Paris in France, Moscow in Russia, Istanbul in Turkey, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, Beijing in China, Seoul in South Korea, Pyongyang in North Korea, Tokyo in Japan, the state of New South Wales in Australia and Los Angeles in the United States.
