SEMARANG, C. Java: Five people were discovered holding forged educational documents in a plot to study at Diponegoro University's (UNDIP) medical school without qualifications.
UNDIP's deputy rector III Sukinta told journalists on Friday that the forgeries were found when the university double checked the students' documents in July.
The students, four women and one man, have been identified only as AM, 19, AR, 22, EI, 23, HM, 21, and a student from Malaysia, JM, 20.
Jm claimed to be a transfer student from Airlangga University in Surabaya, East Java, but a university officer became curious upon noticing an unusual letterhead on his document. The officer cross-checked the document with Airlangga University, which had no record of JM.
The fraud was then reported to Central Java Police. investigation of the other students' documents is continuing.
Undip found the other four students' highest qualification was a high diploma; they did not have the necessary prerequisites for medical school.
The Central Java Police's crime director, Sr. Comr. I Dewa Parsana, said the culprit behind the forgeries had been found.
"The central figure in this scam is M Ay, a resident of Peterongan, Jombang, East Java. We have detained the 44-year-old man while we continue our investigation," said Parsana.
Ay allegedly received Rp 100 million (US$10,400) from each of the four women and Rp 500 million from Jm, he added.
M Ay, who was pursuing a post graduate degree at a prestigious university, has committed similar crimes before. Students he previously helped enter the university fraudulently managed to graduate and obtain under graduate degrees in the medical department.
The students and the suspect, the police said, had violated the National Education System law and Criminal Code, which carry a maximum penalty of eight years in jail. --JP
