ATARAM, W. Nusa Tenggara: Former West Nusa Tengarra governor Lalu Serinta's health deteriorated Thursday as he ended the fourth day of his hunger strike, protesting his detention in Mataram prison.

"Serinata has become weak," Rofiq Ashari, a member of Serinata's legal team, said Thursday, after visiting Serinata in jail.

"He wrote a letter, however, saying he would stage a hunger strike till he died to protest his detention."

Rofiq said Serinata's letter was sent to the Attorney General's Office (AGO) and the President. In the letter, Serinta rejected all of the charges and asked prosecutors to investigate the 2003 administration's staff, including governor Harun Al Rasyid, for the same case.

"We have sent his letter, asking the AGO to release our client. Up to now, we haven't received an answer," Rofiq said.

Mataram prison head I Gede Ketut Artha confirmed that Serinata was becoming weak.

"His condition is weak because he doesn't want to eat at all. We have tried to persuade him to eat, but he has rejected us," said Artha, adding that he had ordered the prison's doctor to check him daily. --JP
