ILACAP, C. Java: Sixty inmates were transferred from Cipinang prison in Jakarta to Nusakambangan prison island off Cilacap, Central Java, an official said Tuesday.
The inmates, mostly sentenced on drug-related charges and serving jail terms of between five and 20 years, were moved because of the lack of space in Cipinang, said Arie Prasongko, a Cipinang prison officer.
"That's why we then chose to move them to Nusakambangan, which still has enough space for security purposes," he said.
"The inmates departed from Cipinang on Monday evening."
On arrival at Nusakambangan, they were divided among five jails: Besi, Batu, Kembangan Kuning, Permisan and Super Maximum Security prisons. There are currently about 1,000 inmates on the prison island. -- JP
