TIMIKA, Papua: The reliance by the Timika sub-branch of state-owned electricity company PT PLN on old diesel power generators is making it difficult to meet consumer demand, an official said.
The consequent power shortage has led to frequent blackouts.
"We cannot prevent blackouts as our main power generator is broken so we cannot meet the peak demand of 8.8 megawatts," sub-branch head Trimanto told reporters Monday.
He said his office needed about Rp 136 billion (US$11.33 million) to replace old power generators and networks.
"It is also time to upgrade the status of the sub-branch into a branch so we can provide better service," he said.
The Timika office comes under the authority of PLN's Jayapura branch. --JP
