JAKARTA: The South Jakarta Farm, Fisheries and Food Security Agency will close down all fowl slaughterhouses in Kebayoran Baru next month to prevent bird flu.
"We hope there will be no more fowl slaughterhouses there by April, so the area can be our pilot project in creating a bird-flu free area," agency head Chaidir Taufik told beritajakarta.com on Tuesday.
Kebayoran Baru currently has 15 slaughterhouses that butcher some 12,000 fowl daily, the agency said.
A 2007 bylaw on fowl distribution in Jakarta stipulates all fowl slaughterhouses in the city must be relocated to Pulogadung, Cakung and Rawa Kepiting in East Jakarta.
Violators face a maximum prison sentence of three months or fines of Rp 50 million (US$4,166). -JP
