BOGOR: In his visit Monday to a newly opened slaughterhouse in Bubulak, West Bogor, Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono said the management of the slaughterhouse should strive to meet international standards.
"I'm concerned about slaughterhouses in the country. Not a single one meets international standards," he claimed.
He said most slaughterhouses he had seen had animal blood splashed all over the floor and cobwebs in the rafters.
The new slaughterhouse in Bubulak stands on 5 hectares of land and has a crematorium and a quarantine room, among other basic facilities.
Anton said that to meet standards, slaughterhouse workers had to work full-time for the slaughterhouse.
Wina, the head of the slaughterhouse management, said the facility had a processing capacity of 200 animals per day, while the older slaughterhouse on Jl. Pemuda can only slaughter 30 to 35 animals a day. - JP
