AKARTA: Traditional rituals and dances welcomed former Gorontalo governor Fadel Muhammad on Monday in his first visit to his home province since his inauguration as the new Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Affairs Minister last Thursday.

A convoy of motorcycles, three-wheel pedicabs and cars flanked the minister from Jalaluddin Airport to his official residence in the provincial capital of Gorontalo.

Fadel was tearful when he saw the mass reception as he descended in the plane that had flown him from Jakarta, Antara reported.

The new minister was accompanied by all his aides.

"I asked all the director generals to accompany me not because I want to show off, but because of the province's wealth in fishery and maritime potential," Fadel said.

While in Gorontalo, Fadel is scheduled to hand over his governor post to his deputy and attend a plenary meeting with provincial government officials. He will bid farewell to all his staff members.

Fadel was appointed fisheries minister as a representative of the Golkar Party in the power-sharing agreement with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. - JP
