ocal retail chain Indomaret has won the right to operate FIFA World Cup 2010 Official Event stores in all 4,000 of its retail outlets across Indonesia.

Marketing director Laurensius Tirta Widjaja said Tuesday at a press conference in Jakarta that Indomaret had struck a deal with FIFA's exclusive worldwide master licensee, the Global Brands Group, to sell around 300 kinds of exclusive FIFA World Cup officially licensed merchandise.

"We see football fans in Indonesia as a big market potential, and we want them to celebrate the festivities of the World Cup with official merchandise," he said, adding Indomaret would unveil its first official event store in January.

"We're expecting to see sales of these kinds of merchandise reach more than Rp 1 billion *US$ 106,000* by July 2010."

Indomaret will pay a 4-5 percent royalty fee for every licensed World Cup product sold.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will take place in South Africa, and will run from June 11 until July 11.

Billions of viewers are expected to tune in to the event's 64 games.

Mark Matheny, CEO and co-chairman of Global Brands Group, said, "Given Indomaret's strong presence and reputation in the local market, it is the perfect store to showcase the world-class merchandise that has been developed for the 2010 FIFA World Cup."

Indomaret has been in the mini-mart business for 22 years, and now boasts a 5 to 10 percent market share. Laurensius said.

The company's 2009 sales figure is projected to reach between Rp 11 trillion and Rp 12 trillion.

Laurensius said selling official 2010 World Cup merchandise would help Indomaret rack up sales next year.

"We're targeting our sales to increase by 25 to 30 percent next year," he added.

Indomaret makes 30 to 50 percent of its profit from non-food products, he went on.

He also said the retail chain would add from 800 to 850 new outlets across the country by the end of next year.

With an increased number of outlets countrywide, the company expects to expand its customer base to 12 million.
