JAKARTA: Police have confirmed a meteorite struck three houses on Jl. Delima in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, on Thursday afternoon.
"Our team from the National Police Forensics Laboratory have confirmed that it is a meteorite," East Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Hasanuddin told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
The meteorite itself had disintegrated after burning several objects in the houses.
However, the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (LAPAN) has yet to confirm the object.
Agency spokesperson Elly Kuntjahyowati said it had not received any objects for further analysis following the incident.
"But from the burnt traces in the houses, such as on a telephone receiver and feather duster, we suspect it was a meteorite," she said.
Elly said her office would continue to work with East Jakarta Police to obtain a sample of the suspected meteorite.
Separately, Research and Technology Minister Suharna Surapranata said it was fortunate the object had not caused any radiation. - JP
