AKARTA: The South Jakarta administration plans to hold the car-free day program at the subdistrict level this year in an effort to reduce pollution levels in the city.
Mayor Syahrul Effendi said Sunday the move was aimed at giving residents the chance to breathe fresh air.
“We expect the event will be held once a month in each subdistrict throughout the municipality,” he told news portal beritajakarta.com on the sideline of Sunday’s car-free day on Jl. Rasuna Said, South Jakarta.
Jakarta Environment Agency (BPLHD) head Peni Susanti said she hoped residents would switch to public transportation, including the TransJakarta busway, especially for long distance trips. —JP
