AKARTA: The House of Representatives has asked for Rp 112 billion (US$12 million) to build so-called “houses of aspiration” for each legislator.
Should the proposal be approved, each legislator will receive Rp 200 million to rent an office and pay staff in their respective electoral districts.
Legislator Pius Lustrilanang said the proposal aimed to accommodate people who want to voice their aspirations to legislators they voted.
"The total budget would be Rp 3.3 trillion, but the government has just approved Rp 2.7 trillion," Pius said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com on Friday.
However, the proposal drew criticism from other legislators.
Budiman Sujatmiko, a legislator from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, said he was against the proposal.
“I can allocate Rp 20 million from my House salary to finance my own house of aspiration,” he said.
“We don't need the money”. — JP
