NDRAMAYU, West Java: Hundreds of well-wishers, including fellow artisans, attended the funeral of Mimi Rasinah, a famous mask dance performer, at Pekandangan village in Indramayu on Sunday.

Several wooden masks Mimi had worn in performances were paraded in a procession in tribute to her faithful commitment to traditional Indonesian arts. After having suffered prolonged complications related to a stroke, Rasinah died on Saturday, a day after she performed at the Kompas' Bentara Budaya in Jakarta, her last performance.

The performance was part of an exhibition titled "Indramayu Dari Dekat" (A Close Look at Indramayu). Mimi's granddaughter, Aerli Rasinah, 24, who performed with her on the stage at Bentara, said her grandmother had been suffering from the stroke for five years.

"She lived and danced in her spirit," she said.

Rasinah died at 2 p.m. at Indramayu Hospital. She was 80. - JP
