AKARTA: Social Services Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri on Tuesday dismissed media reports saying that the government had officially declared former president and revered Muslim cleric Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid a national hero.
The minister said the proposal to declare Gus Dur a hero was still under discussion. “We are still gathering information from the public. The discussion will hopefully be concluded in mid-November,” he said.
Several media outlets quoted East Java deputy governor Syaifullah Yusuf as saying that he was told by a Social Services Ministry official that on Oct. 1 the former Nahdlatul Ulama chairman was declared a national hero.
Gus Dur, born on Aug. 4, 1940, was a controversial figure whose influence went beyond the members of Nahdlatul Ulama. He was elected as the fourth president in 1999 replacing B.J. Habibie. — JP
