URABAYA: The police have netted 77 illegal immigrants from Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Somalia in Laok Janjang waters in Sumenep, East Java, as they were about to travel to Australia.
Sumenep Police chief Comr. Edy Purwanto said Wednesday that the boat’s engine had broken down and left the immigrants, who had just left Surabaya, stranded on Kangean Island for eight hours.
They consisted of 52 men, 13 women and 12 children, Edy said. “None of them had any documents,” he said.
Edy said his subordinates were investigating the case, including questioning the boat captain, Yasin, who hails from East Nusa Tenggara.
“We’ve coordinated with officials of the immigration and prosecutor’s offices, including on the possible deportation of the illegal immigrants,” he said. — JP
