AKARTA: The National Police reported Saturday that Panji Gumilang, the alleged leader of the Islamic State of Indonesia (NII) movement, would not be present for questioning on Monday due to poor health.
“We have spoken to his lawyer, who said Panji could not attend due to an illness,” National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar was quoted as saying Saturday by news portal kompas.com.
Police will not question him on his alleged involvement in the NII as there is not enough evidence to do so, but on the forgery of a legal document on the establishment of the Indonesia Islamic Boarding House Foundation (YPI), which controls the Al-Zaytun boarding school.
Testimony from former NII members says the subversive group received funds raised through the boarding school.
The scheduled questioning was in response to testimony by former NII member Imam Supriyanto, who said Panji forged documents for the YPI. Imam also accused Panji of leading the NII.
Panji, who is a suspect in the forgery case, failed to appear for questioning on Monday. He was represented by his lawyer, Ali Tanjung, who informed police that doctors had instructed Panji to rest. Ali did not identify Panji’s illness.
“We will give Panji a deadline to appear for questioning. If after the deadline he still hasn’t appeared, we will have police doctors examine him,” Boy said.
