RI weightlifters win two golds at Universiade

AKARTA: Indonesian weightlifters brought home two gold medals and one bronze at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen, China, which ran from Aug. 18-23.

Eko Yuli Irawan grabbed his gold in the men’s 62 kilograms, while Denny’s was in the men’s 69 kilogram and Surahmat bagged the bronze in the men’s 56 kilogram at the event, which is also known as the World University Games.

Indonesian Weightlifting, Bodybuilding and Powerlifting Association’s (PABBSI) weightlifting division head Sori Enda Nasution said that Eko, 2008 Olympics’ bronze medalist, managed to lift a total of 310 kilogram, while Denny did 321 kilogram.

Eko’s lifting was lower compared to his achievement at Guangzhou’s Asian Games last year with a total of 315 kilogram.

“[Eko] has indeed under [-achieved], but I believe he can catch up. I am also sure that Eko can grab a gold medal in the upcoming 26th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to repeat his top-performance in the 2009 Games in Laos,” he added.

In the meantime, Denny managed to show significant progress compared to his 136 kilogram in lifting when he first joined the national squad.

“I think Denny is still able to improve his ability, reaching more kilos in his lifting. Because this time his lifting surpassed Triyatno’s,” said Sori Enda, referring to Indonesia’s other weightlifting hero.

Sori Enda said that each athlete could gain a ticket to the Games by taking part in a national competition in Bandung, West Java, from Sept. 18-20.

“Whoever is the best will win the ticket. We treat each of them fairly,” he added.
