AKARTA: Tap water operator PT PAM Lyonnaise Jaya (Palyja) has moved to shut down an illegal water connection set up by local residents in Pejagalan subdistrict in West Jakarta on Thursday.

Company spokesperson Meyritha Maryanie said Palyja had been closing illegal water connections in the area since 2006.

“But this kind of theft happens time and time again,” Meyritha said.

The company said that the water connection had been used by dozens of families living under an elevated highway nearby.

Palyja said that in the last eight months there had been 1,390 cases of water theft by tap water customers and 344 theft cases by non-customers.
