AKARTA: Governor Fauzi Bowo said on Monday that he had reprimanded the operator of the Transjakarta busway transit system after the death of two people in two accidents involving its buses.
Ayuningtyas, a 17-year-old high school student, died early on Sunday after being hit by a Kampung Melayu-Ancol Transjakarta bus on Jl. Jatinegara Barat, East Jakarta.
Later on Sunday, a 5-year-old boy died after being hit by a Transjakarta bus on the Blok M-Kota route. “The safety of passengers and everyone around the bus area should be of the utmost priority,” he said.
He said that Transjakarta should improve its current management system. Fauzi also added that the recently inaugurated tracking system should be used effectively to prevent drivers from speeding. “Transjakarta should punish its reckless drivers and that is the function of the tracking system,” he said.
The tracking system is currently applied only on the Blok M — Kota route. The city administration expects to install the tracking system on all routes in the future.
A bylaw states that Transjakarta buses must not travel at a speed of more than 60 kilometers per hour.
