AKARTA: Suspended bankruptcy judge Syarifuddin Umar may be imprisoned for 20 years if convicted of taking a Rp 250 million (US$28,250) bribe to decide a case.
Prosecutors told judges at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Thursday that Syarifuddin received a bribe from Puguh Wirawan, the bankruptcy trustee of garment maker PT Skycamping Indonesia (SCI).
Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigators arrested Syarifuddin at his home in Sunter, North Jakarta, on June 1, shortly after he allegedly received the money. Prosecutor Zeth Tadung Allo told the court that Syariffudin was bribed to lift the troubled status from two plots so SCI could sell the land.
“[Receiving] the money gift from Puguh violated the supervisory judge’s obligation in supervising the handling and settlement of the bankruptcy assets of PT SCI,” another prosecutor, Irene Putri, said.
