Economy in brief: Norwegian company to build LNG terminal

J

AKARTA: Norwegian-based liquefied natural gas (LNG) transportation and services company Höegh has been appointed as the contractor to construct the Belawan floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in North Sumatra, which is owned by state gas distributor PT PGN.

Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Widjajono Partowidagdo said on Monday that the company had won the tender for Belawan and was now eyeing the same project in Central Java.

“They really hope they can also win the tender in Central Java because they have expertise in that field [building floating LNG-receiving terminals],” he said after meeting representatives of the company at
his office.

PGN said earlier the Belawan FSRUs would yield a total capacity of 1.5 million tons of gas per annum. Between 60 and 70 percent of gas from the terminal will be allocated to state electricity company PT PLN, while the remaining stock will be delivered to industries in North Sumatra.

The LNG for the terminal will come from the Tangguh LNG plant in Papua. Widjajono estimated that the unit would begin operations in 2013.
