AKARTA: Residents in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta had to flee to higher ground on Tuesday after 30-centimeter-high water inundated their homes soon after the Ciliwung River overflowed.
Local resident Normawi said that local officials failed to issue a warning about the flooding, which was a result of a heavy downpour in the upstream region in Bogor, West Java.
“We were really surprised. The floods suddenly inundated our homes early in the morning. We did not anticipate the floods because there was no warning. We were lucky because the water was not too high,” he said.
Floodwater also inundated Pondok Labu in South Jakarta. Water kept rising in the area since early on Monday.
A torrential downpour caused the nearby Krukut river to overflow, despite a government-initiated river-dredging project.
Some residents said that the water was one meter high as of Tuesday morning.
