Julie Estelle: Sister’s best friend

T

he 23-year-old actress talks about her new role in her latest love story, Brokenhearts, directed by Helfi Kardit, and her bond with sister, actress and emcee Cathy Sharon, who recently got married.

In Brokenhearts, I portray a woman named Olivia, a book editor who is loved by two best friends played by Reza Rahadian and Darius Sinatrya. (Reza plays Olivia’s boyfriend who leaves her after he is diagnosed with heart cancer and asks his best friend to take his place as Olivia’s beau. Ed)

This was a quite challenging drama for me since I only had a couple of days to read it, while my role forced me to delve into the Olivia character, who loves two men at the same time.

In such a limited time, however, I was able to push myself to give my best. I was very grateful that Reza and Darius were very open, cooperative and professional at the same time.

Now that I have finished with Brokenhearts, I am busy shooting a soap opera and there will be another feature film, but I can’t yet discuss the project.

Yes, I am interested in working behind the camera as a director. I once assisted Cathy in directing a short film (titled Gadis di Ruang Tunggu or Girl in the Waiting Room, starring Laudya Cynthia Bella. Ed) for an indie movie festival in which she won an award (as emerging filmmaker. Ed).

Since my current schedule is very tight, it is too hectic for me to start any directorial project. It would be tough for me to make time to create a film while I am acting in feature films and soap operas.

I give my all when doing something, especially in making a film, so that the result is really good, not just average. I do hope that I can direct a short film next year.

Apart from showbiz, I like to spend time with friends and family, especially with Cathy.

We often do things together, including travel. (In April, Cathy married Eka Kusuma in Bali, while Julie was reported to have split from singer-songwriter Marcello “Ello” Tahitoe. Ed)

Do I miss Cathy? It was kind of a shock for me at the beginning, since I lived with Cathy in Jakarta for such a long time and we had always been together, and now she has married and lives with her husband.

I do feel a bit sad, but it does not mean that I have lost her. I try to see the bright side of this situation; that I now have a new brother, Cathy’s husband.

And hey, Cathy and I still do things together. We, along with friends and relatives, will take a three-week trip to Europe, visiting Jerusalem, Amsterdam and cities in France. In France, we plan to visit relatives (Julie was born to an Indonesian mother and a French father. Ed).

Another hobby? I like eating, especially Japanese food like sushi and sashimi. When I travel, I always spare time to for a culinary tour.

I am not afraid of getting fat or anything because I am not the type of person who easily gains weight.

I guess I inherited that from Mama. Thank you Mama. To keep fit, I usually go to the gym when I am not busy filming.
