Issues of the day: Cleric certification is rights violation: Mahfud MD

Constitutional Court Justice Mahfud MD considers a proposal by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) to certify Islamic scholars or clerics as a way of minimizing the risk of radicalism to be a violation of human rights.

“I do not agree with the proposal. It is an excessive measure and a violation of human rights. It means that all Muslims would be barred from speaking, whereas in Islam, Muslims are encouraged to spread Islamic teachings and deliver them orally, even if they comprise only one verse,” Mahfud said on the sidelines of the 56th anniversary of Hasanuddin University in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Monday.

Your comments:

Someone should tell the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) that radicalism and terrorism don’t occur just because the government doesn’t issue certificates for clerics.

The solution to this issue is if the government treats its citizens equally under the law and brings to justice those criminals who commit crimes in the name of religion.

How can you establish justice and protect human rights by violating a human right and following your religious tendencies instead of abiding by the Indonesian Constitution?

One can easily predict what will happen when the BNPT itself does not know what to do.

Instead of concentrating on the terrorists, they will start arresting people who don’t have a certificate even though they may be urging people to do good and forsaking evil, while they will allow others who preach hatred to continue doing so just because they have a certificate.

Mahfud said: “Cleric certification means identifying clerics with terrorists.”

I don’t understand why he is against such an important certification.

History shows where terrorism comes from. This regulation is crucial in order to prevent further radicalism and stop the killing of innocent people.

I think certification is the best idea. This should be passed into law as soon as possible.

Clerics should have their words and actions monitored in order to lower the rate of radicalism in Indonesia.

If “clerics” conduct sermons without a license, then the establishment at which the sermon took place should be closed until further notice, a fine imposed on the owner of the establishment, and the “cleric” sent to jail for dissent.
