outh Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin inaugurated the country's first ever gas-powered electricity plant (PLTG) in Jakabaring, Palembang, on Monday afternoon.
The plant was built by state-owned utility PT PLN (Persero) and its local counterpart, PT Perusahaan Daerah Pertambangan and Energy (PDPE), a mining and energy company owned by the South Sumatra government. The location of the US$10 million Jakabaring CNG Storage is considered strategic due to its proximity to a gas pipeline owned by state-run oil and gas
company PT Pertamina.
'We will operate similar power plants in Jambi and Pasuruan, East Java, later this year,' PLN president director Nur Pamuji said following the project's inauguration. 'Such power plants can also be developed on smaller islands.'
The PLTG would function as a back-up power station during the peak hours of 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., local time. PT PDPE president director Caca Isah Saleh said power demands in Palembang were currently at about 422 MW while in the entire province was 686 MW.
