South Sumatra opens CNG-powered plant

S

outh Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin inaugurated the country'€™s first ever gas-powered electricity plant (PLTG) in Jakabaring, Palembang, on Monday afternoon.

The plant was built by state-owned utility PT PLN (Persero) and its local counterpart, PT Perusahaan Daerah Pertambangan and Energy (PDPE), a mining and energy company owned by the South Sumatra government. The location of the US$10 million Jakabaring CNG Storage is considered strategic due to its proximity to a gas pipeline owned by state-run oil and gas
company PT Pertamina.

'€œWe will operate similar power plants in Jambi and Pasuruan, East Java, later this year,'€ PLN president director Nur Pamuji said following the project'€™s inauguration. '€œSuch power plants can also be developed on smaller islands.'€

The PLTG would function as a back-up power station during the peak hours of 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., local time. PT PDPE president director Caca Isah Saleh said power demands in Palembang were currently at about 422 MW while in the entire province was 686 MW.
