resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has urged businessmen to pay attention to their workers' welfare. The statement was made in a meeting with workers in Sidoarjo, East Java as part of the May Day observation.
'The economy has been growing and thus companies have made more profit. Therefore, this should be the right moment to consider the workers' welfare,' said Yudhoyono in front of 500 PT Maspion factory workers on Wednesday, Kompas.com reported.
Yudhoyono has also encouraged better relationships between management and the workers because it would have a good impact on industry.
The president also announced his plan to turn May Day into a public holiday starting next year.
'The regulation is on the way. Therefore, God willing we could observe next year's May Day in a more solemn way,' he said.
After visiting Maspion factory workers, Yudhoyono is scheduled to visit workers at the PT Unilever factory and Surabaya Industrial Estate Rungkut (SIER).(nai/dic)
