he Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI) has condemned Sunday's bombing of the Ekayana Buddhist Vihara in West Jakarta, saying that the attack seemed to be intended to heighten public fear and tension.
PGI executive secretary Jeirry Sumampow said on Tuesday that the communion expressed solidarity with the blast victims and the Buddhist community.
'We hope that the Buddhist community can stay calm in performing their religious services,' Jeirry said.
'Our prayers are with the victims,' he went on.
A bomb exploded inside the Vihara Ekayana in Kebon Jeruk, on Sunday evening, injuring three people and damaging some parts of the house of worship. The temple was established in 1995 to accommodate Buddhist students studying in nearby universities.
As the incident occurred during the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadhan, Jeirry urged the Muslim community not to be provoked. He also called on the National Police to carry out a thorough investigation into the case.
Jeirry added that existing means and efforts to eradicate terrorism were not enough.
'It is important to consider other measures to root out terrorism by, among other things, increasing the role of the Religious Affairs Ministry in this matter,' he said. (ebf)
