haerul Umam died on Thursday at 3 p.m. in Jakarta after he was hospitalized due to a stroke. The noted film director was 70..
'My father, Chaerul Umam, has passed away. I, Aulia Akbar, ask for forgiveness if during his life he made mistakes, intentionally or unintentionally,' Chaerul's son Aulia said through a BBM message as quoted by detikhot.com.
Actor Sys NS, a friend of the family, said that Chaerul's funeral was set for Friday.
Chaerul was a respected film director who often worked with screenwriter Asrul Sani, directing the critically acclaimed Titian Serambut Dibelah Tujuh (Thin Tightrope) in 1982 and Kejarlah Daku Kau Kutangkap (Chase Me and I'll Catch You) in 1986, both based on Asrul's scripts.
His latest work included the religious melodrama Ketika Cinta Bertasbih (When Love Extolls) in 2009.
