AKARTA: Banten-based theater director Nandang Aradea passed away on Saturday, age 42, after fighting a battle against kidney disease for eight years.

Nandang's theater group, Teater Studio Indonesia in Serang, Banten has just won the Festival Tokyo Award for the festival's emerging artist program last year with their production, The Bionarration of a Disjointed Body! (Emergency).

He was supposed to put on a new production next month, Overdose: Psycho-Catastrophe, in Tokyo, together with the group he founded. The play, which features a bamboo set, will still take place.

The director who obtained a graduate degree from Russian University of The Theatre Arts (GITIS) had been involved in theater production since the 1990s, including at Teater Lakon and Mainteater in Bandung, West Java.

He is survived by his wife, Lina Susanti, an editorial secretary staff member at The Jakarta Post and their 13-year-old daughter.
