ining giant PT Freeport Indonesia is to develop facilities to purify mineral ore or smelter in a public private partnership (PPP) with state-owned diversified miner PT Aneka Tambang (Antam).
"Freeport will work together with Antam to set up a smelter," Energy and Mineral Resources Deputy Minister Susilo Siswoutomo said in Jakarta on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
As stated in Law No. 4/2009 on mineral and coal mining, companies were obliged to increase added value in their mining products. Thus, mining firms were required to develop smelters.
Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa previously said that Freeport, through its official letter on Wednesday, had announced to the government that it wanted to set up smelter in the country under a PPP plan. (nfo)
