Dems to announce presidential candidate on Thursday

T

he Democratic Party will announce its presidential candidate selected through its presidential convention on May 15, a senior party official has said.

Democratic Party spokesperson Ruhut Sitompul said there would be two or three names put forward to potentially fill a spot on a presidential ticket for the party.

'€œTwo or three presidential candidates selected through the convention could also become the vice presidential running mate of either Pak Jokowi [Joko '€˜Jokowi'€™ Widodo] or Pak Prabowo [Prabowo Subianto],'€ said Ruhut at the House of Representatives complex in Jakarta on Monday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

He further said it was also possible for the Democratic Party to create a new coalition comprising several political parties to support the party'€™s presidential nomination.

'€œIf our coalition partners want A or B to become the presidential candidate, we will go ahead and discuss it,'€ said Ruhut.

He went on to say that he was optimistic the Democratic Party could put forward its own presidential candidate via a new coalition of small and mid-sized parties so it could nominate its own presidential candidate, even though several of those parties had previously announced they would partner either with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) or the Gerindra Party.

Ruhut also mentioned, however, that it could be possible for the Democrats to become an opposition party. (dhi/ebf)
