group of 150 people with Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid (JAT), a hard-line organization founded by jailed cleric and terror convict Abu Bakar Ba'asyir, beat up a fan of the rock band Slank during a Car Free Day program in Surakarta on Sunday.
The trouble started when JAT members were parading in the event to welcome the Ramadhan fasting month, which will start in the next two weeks, and they came upon a group of street musicians performing Slank's songs.
The hard-liners accused fans watching the performance of consuming alcohol and spat on one of them. Khalil Rakhmat, 22, was then beaten up after he confronted the JAT members. 'I was just asking why they spat on my brother and then they punched me,' said Khalil, who suffered cuts and bruises.
Khalil denied that he or any of the other fans had been drinking.
Meanwhile, JAT Surakarta leader Muhammad Sholeh Ibrahim said the music group could be dispersed if its fans had been consuming alcohol. 'I will check with the field coordinator of the parade.'
