AKARTA: The Indonesia U-23 team under coach Aji Santoso overwhelmed Timor Leste with seven goals to none in their Group E soccer match at the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, on Monday.
Ferdinand Sinaga came out the team's top scorer with four goals, with the other three being put in by Alfin Tuasalamony, Novri Setiawan and Fandi Eko Utomo, in the match at Goyang Stadium, which was aired live on RCTI.
Ferdinand, which currently plays for Persib Bandung in the Indonesian Super League, netted his goals in the fifth, ninth, 35th and 83rd minutes.
Alfin found the net from the penalty box in the 78th minute, following a hand-ball foul by a Timor Leste player, while Novri and Eko made theirs in the 81st and 86th minutes respectively.
Indonesia's next game will be against the Maldives. The other team in the group is regional rival Thailand.
The 17th Asian Games will officially open for its two-week sporting gala on Sept. 19, but the soccer competition, which sees 29 men's teams split into eight groups and 11 women's teams into three groups, already began on Sept. 14.
