Incumbent Golkar Party chairman Aburizal Bakrie is expected to seek reelection as party chairman in a congress scheduled for next year.
A member of the party's central board, Hajriyanto J. Tohari, said it was likely that Aburizal would be joined by other politicians, such as Agung Laksono, MS Hidayat and Priyo Budi Santoso, in the race for the party's leadership.
'Things could change. ARB could say yes if there was a proposal [to nominate him],' Hajriyanto said, referring to Aburizal by his initials.
He said the fact that Aburizal was not nominated as a presidential candidate in the July 9 election could work to his advantage.
'From the beginning, we agreed that the Golkar chairman should not be nominated as a presidential candidate. We have a political contract on this,' Hajriyanto said.
Rival factions within Golkar have launched a movement to unseat Aburizal later this year, primarily for his failure to secure a win for Golkar in April's legislative election.
