Volunteer organizations for president-elect Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo have invited members of the public to join a street party to celebrate his inauguration on Oct. 20, when revellers will enjoy free meals and snacks as well as a concert by the country's biggest rock band, Slank.
Iwan Dwi Laksono, one of the street party organizers, said on Friday that after the presidential inauguration at the House of Representatives complex, Jokowi and vice president-elect Jusuf Kalla would take part in a 'people's parade' riding a horse-drawn carriage from Semanggi to the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle.
Several traditional performances, including ondel-ondel (traditional Betawi effigies), Reog Ponorogo and Chinese barongsai dances, are expected to liven up the parade.
'We will hand out 100,000 bracelets and small red-and-white flags to visitors to welcome Jokowi during the parade. Jokowi will stop off at the traffic circle for a little celebration before continuing his trip to the State Palace,' Iwan, who leads two Jokowi-volunteer bodies, JAMAN and KORNAS, said by phone.
At the palace complex, Jokowi and Kalla will be welcomed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his ministers. Yudhoyono is expected to give a tour of the State Palace and Merdeka Palace before returning to his private residence in Cikeas, West Java.
After completing the official ceremony, Jokowi will take the stage at the National Monument (Monas) Park in front of Merdeka Palace to make a speech to the nation as new president and subsequently take part in the concert.
'Jokowi will collaborate with Slank, while Kalla will sing with Bimbo [Bandung-based religious group]. Both Jokowi and Kalla have given the go-ahead for that plan,' Iwan said.
More than 600 street-food vendors have registered themselves with the party committee to provide bakso (meatball soup), noodles, siomay (fish dumplings) and other types of snacks to be given free to visitors during the event.
'The associations of bakso sellers and warteg [food stalls] have agreed to serve their food for free. We welcome this initiative,' Iwan said.
More than 50,000 Jokowi volunteers from across Java and Sumatra will come to Jakarta at their own expense to support the event. 'We will assign a team of volunteers to maintain the cleanliness of the venues during the event,' Iwan said.
Meanwhile, National Police chief Gen. Sutarman made a final check of his personnel's preparedness for the presidential inauguration at the concert at Monas.
The police and the Indonesian Military (TNI) will jointly deploy 24,815 personnel to secure the inauguration day, including Jokowi's parade and the concert.
'The security of the president, vice president and world leaders will be the responsibility of the TNI. In addition to that, the police have prepared a team to support the Presidential Security Detail [Paspampres]' he said.
Among the world leaders who have confirmed their attendance are Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, US Secretary of State John Kerry, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.
