Jakarta's double-decker tourist buses will have to run without tour guides as the city administration has cut the tourism budget.
City Tour Jakarta tour guide coordinator Asep Kambali said the Jakarta Culture and Tourism Agency had terminated the contract of 12 tour guides following budget cuts.
He lamented the decision, saying that the tourist buses would simply be regular buses without the guides.
'When [former governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo] introduced the tour bus, he wanted to introduce the history of Jakarta to tourists. Big cities in other countries also operate tour buses,' Asep said as quoted by tempo.co.
Jokowi launched the double-decker tour buses in January last year, aiming to establish the capital as a tourist destination. The tour buses became popular, particularly with domestic tourists, on weekends and during holidays.
The tour buses' route takes in the National Monument (Monas), the National Museum, Pasar Baru and the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, all in Central Jakarta. (***)
