mall and medium enterprise players from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore gathered in Batam, Riau Islands, on Saturday in a bid to develop possible business partnerships.
'This is a good opportunity for the players to get to know each other and develop business opportunities among them,' Riau Island head of economic development Syamsul Bahrum said in Batam as quoted by Antara news agency.
Syamsul said that such a business gathering was important to increase economic activities among the three countries ahead of the Asean Economic Community (AEC), which is slated to be implemented at the end of this year.
'This gathering is the embryo of future cooperation among players from the three nations,' he explained.
In addition, National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) secretary-general Syed Hussein al-Habsyi said he believed that Saturday's event in Batam would help create more business opportunities.
Moreover, Bank Indonesia's Riau Island branch head, Gusti Raizal Eka Putra, expected that Indonesia could become a strong player during the implementation of the AEC.
'This province has a huge potential in maritime and fishery, yet this sector has not been developed to the maximum,' Gusti said. (nfo)(++++)
