UPANG: A ferry carrying 36 passengers caught fire off the Tanjung Gemuk coast in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) at around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.
'Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident. All the passengers survived by leaping into the sea,' NTT Police chief Brig. Gen. Endang Sunjaya told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
According to Endang, passengers of the ferry were immediately rescued at sea by members of a team led by East Flores Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Putu Gede Artha and another team from the East Flores Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), which arrived at the location by rescue boat.
He added that of the 36 passengers, two were foreign visitors and one was a child.
Based on preliminary investigations, said Endang, the source of fire came from an air-conditioning generator located below the engine compartment.
According to Endang, the ferry was traveling from Larantuka Port in East Flores to Lewoleba, Lembata, when the fire started.
